Lynn Herring has been working with video installations to augment her box people sculptures. Her three-minute “Navel Gazing” demands the viewer to quiet herself and go to the simple inner space of watching another person breathe. The belly on the screen brings the viewer deep into his or her own inner breath in the same way a meditation does. “Egg on my face” and Egg on my feet” are grouped with “Navel Gazing” to augment the cyclical experience of the body. “What is the point?” is an absurd video in which the artist repeatedly sticks a pencil in her ear as if to sharpen it. These videos are living, breathing photos. No words are spoken. There is no interaction or dialogue with another person. We are being invited into an inner world that is mute.
